We are engaged in a democratic exercise. We are going to elect a person to represent us in a Council / Parliement / European Parliement. We have this opportunity NOW, for our representatives in the Parliament / European Parliement decided for us that we should have an election to choose a person to represent us to the Council / Parliement / European Parliement.
This is called representative democracy, for we elect our representatives every so often, and they as our representatives rule us!
But, there is no need to wait for elections every 2-4 or 5 years, local, national or European. We can elect and deselect our local, national, and international representatives everyday; nay more, we do not even need to elect any representatives. We can decide on the issues that they decide for us, ourselves!
This is called DIRECT DEMOCRACY.
In ancient Greece, the city state of Athens was ruled through direct democracy for a period of time.
Male citizens of Athens would come together 40 times a year regularly, or anytime the need arisen in a stadium; pick up a black pebble (for no) and a white pebble (for yes). Discuss anything they needed to discuss, be it the price of bread, olive oil, wine, the amount of tax needed to run the state, or whatever. After the discussion, they would vote and decide. No representatives were ever elected. No need for a local council, therefore for councillors; no need for a national parliament, therefor for MPs; no need for a European Parliament, therefor for MEPs. Just an executive,-one that could be voted off any time- that had to apply the results of the votes of the citizens in practice.
This is what we should have too. With a few differences. Every citizen should have the right to vote, not just the male members of the society-well, we already have this thanks to the battles fought in the past. We should come together through the network of computers-not in a stadium, that would be rather impossible don’t you think! We should use not pebbles, but computer buttons to vote yes or no. And each one of us should become a part of the executive, an executor of the decisions arrived by all.
Direct Democracy means we use our technological abilities to produce plenty for the citizens-not to destroy things and people. Direct democracy means every citizen decides on everything under the sun-not leave it to their so-called representatives. Direct democracy means every citizen also executes the common decisions of the citizens-not leave it to an executive body separated from the citizens.
We can have this today!
Thanks to computers, all production, transportation, communication, finance, and thus distribution of all that is produced can be computerised, in other words they can be made fully automatic. This also means that all these activities as well as the activities of health, education, leisure and sports can be recorded and be made available for all to see and judge for themselves. Each one of us would be in a position to know what are our resources, how are they being spend, and decide on how they should be spend. Whole of Hackney, the whole country and indeed the world would become an ancient Athens, a modern and huge ancient Athens.
All of this also makes it possible for all the citizens to take part in the administration of the state. We can have a mechanism whereby we can vote on every individual and on every subject matter that effects our lives, everyday. We can have elections everyday and thus get rid of anybody who does not act in the way he should, in other words he is out if he wants to take care of himself instead of the public, to serve whom he is supposed to have been elected.
This is what the candidates of DD(C)P undertake to work to achieve!
